How it started:
I was listening to the pirates such as Kiss, Fantasy and Centreforce and started going out at the weekends to underground warehouse and house parties and was amazed by the role of the DJ in how he was entertaining the crowds.
I started buying records ranging from Public Enemy to A Guy Called Gerald when I was at school and finally brought my first Technics 1210 MK2 deck at 17 with a Phonic MRT60 mixer. I started practising mixing from tapes into records and in August 1991 saved enough money to buy my second Technics 1210 MK2 deck. During 1992 -1994 I tried & practise beat matching with different styles of music ranging from HipHop and House to Hardcore (1991/1992 style) and Jungle. Finally in the summer of 1994 I did my first mixtape which I gave out to my friends and received good feedback about the choice and style of mixing.
Over the years I’ve Played out at several parties & events ranging from House Parties and Clubs to The Notting Hill Carnival.
Personal Style:
When I DJ, I tend to mix a varied style of music ranging from upfront funky house to club classics. During my early days of Djing I was limited in the choise of records because of the size of vinyl and the amount of records I could bring. Now using final scratch I now have a much wider selection of tunes to mix with, which means more choice for the crowd to listen to. When Djing I try to read the crowd and try to play what the crowd what they want to dance to.
Personal Achievements:
During the 90’s I worked on several projects involving DJ studio workshops for teenagers and adults, setting up and running a community radio station and an internet-based radio station for young people. Alongside this I have been making tunes and Djing which in turn has giving me experience in this field.
To The Future:
I love Mixing and playing out. I don’t see myself Djing as a full time career since I feel you become complacent.
What I will say is that when I DJ, I still get the buzz and satisfaction of mixing for the crowd.
